ABOUT ASHI

There are many other home inspection organizations, but none require more competence or more experience than ASHI. Do not be fooled by so-called "Certified" inspectors. Often, certification requires little more than passing an on-line, open-book exam and submitting a $300 membership fee. Click here to compare the different home inspection associations.

If you visit your local real estate office and collect home inspection company brochures, you will likely notice the majority of them claim, "Our inspections meet or exceed the ASHI Standards." What does this mean? It means most home inspection companies recognize ASHI to be the authority on home inspections.

But don't be fooled! Only ASHI Members are held accountable by ASHI to meet the ASHI Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics. It is easy to claim to meet ASHI's strict Standards, however proving to abide by them is something only ASHI Members can do. Before hiring your Inspector, be sure he is an ASHI Member by visiting www.ashi.org.

To become a Member of ASHI, an Inspector must meet rigorous professional and technical requirements. Once a Member, an Inspector must adere to the Society's Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics, and must obtain continuing education credits every year.

Don't trust your home to someone who merely claims to adhere to the ASHI Standards.

About the American Society of Home Inspectors,® Inc.

In 1976, a group of visionary Home Inspectors with the common goal of building consumer awareness and enhancing the professionalism of their field, established the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI). This not-for-profit professional association's first order of business was to establish and advocate high Standards of Practice and a strict Code of Ethics for the member community.

Today, with 6,000+ members and 80+ chapters, ASHI is the largest and most respected professional association for Home Inspectors in North America. Through ASHI's continued efforts, ASHI's Standards of Practice covering all of a home's major systems are now part of many pieces of state legislation and are recognized by consumers as the authoritative standard for professional home inspection.
